The thing I want how people should remember me… is that I brought them a good time with hope and love. We are all part of a chain. Be part of it and let us generate love worldwide. So share it to generate it.
A gentle sharing person was sitting in front of me to have a little chat just before his opening performance at North Sea Jazz. For Charlie Wilson it will be his first time playing on the North Sea Jazz Festival. He is having a really good time here and as he says ;’ It feels good to be back. I have been touring in Europe with a variety of bands or artists in the early days. But now I am excited to be here on this great event. It is good to see so many artist here, its feels like a reunion. It is wonderful to share the joy of music. I really missed that.’
Charlie had the music accompany him through his whole live. Singing at a very young age in the Church was the beginning. Growing up he learned to play all kind of instruments to discover more of the variety of composing with different instruments. His unique talent was actually discovered while during a take for a commercial. At this (turning) point in his life Charlie starts to create his own music and with success.
Starting in the 70’s with the renowned Gap Band, Zap and so much more, leaving an imprint on those who heard or saw his energetic performance. Charlie still is that energetic person, although something has changed. The man who loves to share love is now also guiding different young artists; household names of global fame in the music business . Who they are is not the essence to Charlie. ” It is what they do’ he states with that fatherly voice. “I am helping them to create a good start with music and their life.” And that is the reason why Charlie is called Uncle Charlie these days. A happy man, sharing the faith of life, joy and happiness. ‘You may call it love”, as he says smoothly just moments before the opening performance at North Sea Jazz. Then excited “Finally the boy is out! I can’t wait to perform!”
It is all about that energy
CW: I started singing when I was three years old. At home and in the church, my mom was playing the piano and I was singing. I love that part and as I speak about it, I can still feel the joy. When people started to sing with me in church and the energy went up…I really felt a happy boy! That is the moment when I really felt for the first time my passion or love for singing. In the 2nd grade I start singing in the junior high school’s choir. My father was a priest but love to hear all kind of music. My mom didn’t like secular music and forbid it at home. So my dad and I went outside listening in the car or when friends came by to let us hear a new piece we went outside listening music in their car. That was a fun time. Listening to Blues, Soul and Jazz and smuggling music in the house with my brothers. I was discovered by doing a commercial and after that I was finding my path in the music. In that way this is all a precursor to my musical career.
'Love to be Back On Stage. That is what I need and feel to do.'
CW: Suddenly you feel it is time again to go back on stage doing shows and going on tour.I enjoy that, going to places and meeting people. I do miss the part of being on stage. Before I have to go on stage, I just feel a ball of fire inside me building up that has to come out on stage. The most part that I love with doing shows is when the audience is taking up that fire of energy. If I feel that synergy…. than I can say that was a great show to do and I am a very happy man.
Music is a dialogue
CW: As you know, you cannot reinvent music but you can create music differently, making it your own thing. I am mixing new with the past, but always with that funky baseline and gospel rifles. That is what making or creating music so great to. My sound? I would describe it as a mixture of all kind of styles. But it all start here, in the heart, because you have to feel it what you want to do. So for me composing or making music is what I like to share with the audience. Bringing that feeling of joy together as one. My music is having a dialogue with the audience. So the interaction on stage is essential for me. Creating that synergy together, I call it love.
Value yourself first
Uncle Charlie and his wife Mahin makes you feel like family with saying hello to you from the heart. That special welcome feeling is great. So when Charlie starts talking about his life now and his ‘nephews‘ you can see a proud ‘Uncle’ doing the talking. Sparkling eyes and a big smile and a different tone of voice. He’s telling me how its feels to be the Uncle Charlie for his so called ‘nephews’. Making sure they do the right things to become a better person and musician.
CW: As you might know I have some nephews, that is how I call them.Snoopy Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Pharrel Williams, Kanye West, John Legend and more. I learned them everything from the pit. When your young, and specially in the music business, you need a good guidance. You know why? Because sometimes the younger ones just listen better to their uncle (or lets say a bystander when they are young). It has another dynamic when uncle has said it instead of a mom or dad. They receive the message differently. And standing in this music business is also about having discipline, this you can do, this you must not do. So it is good that I can be a ‘Uncle’ who can give them the right direction or guidance. Helping them to make to right choice or adjustment like being humble, be a good listener! I can tell from my experiences and give them the right advice. Getting them the right base as a person who you are to start up. So that is why they call me these days Uncle Charlie and I am proud of it.
North Sea Jazz Sunday review

The opening started with Charlie Wilson or should I say the party…
First name Charlie last name Wilson and his Party Train knows how to make a party going. The show starts when a great band and dancers are making their entrance followed by Charlie last name Wilson.First name Charlie last name Wilson and his Party Train knows how to make a party going. When Charlie starts with the first notes the audience starts singing happily along with him. Charlie opens the show singing his own compositions he wrote for Snoop Dogg followed by many hits everybody knows. His performance gives a high energetic boost to the audience. When Charlie sings about Angels, there where Angels on stage. When it should be colorful, there is color. The variety of singing the old and new songs created a soul good vibe. The crowd is singing dancing and shouting out for more. He is setting the standards high for that day. The Charlie Wilson show at North Sea Jazz was really a blast.
Charlie last name Wilson sending love...
