On Fire with Michael Patches Stewart

Creating with the best of two worlds

A great journey through music with Michael Patches Stewarts, ft George Duke, Poogie Bell, Paul Jackson Jr, Robert Kubiszyn and Kenny Garret. No wonder the title of the new CD is 'On Fire'.

Patches is worldwide known as an outstanding trumpeter who knows how to play his instrument to the full. Playing with different people and making contact with the audience is what makes its all worthwhile. The way he plays the trumpet is a bless for the listener of good fine music. Patches know with his own typical melodic sound to touch the heart, gently singing and moving. Having a great passion for art and lives in Poland for many years now and plays in Full Drive 3- a project of a Polish sax player Henryk Miskiewicz. Patches is still on the road touring and composing. Doing that thing what he loves the most.

Micheal Patches Stewart is someone who knows how to compose his melodic play too mixed music.

MPS: I love playing in Poland. I have been touring with Poogie Bell and just recently with two bands the AMC Trio and Nikolaj Nikitin Quartet. After producing my three solo albums – Blue Patches (1997), Penetration (1999) and Blow (2005 -produced by Marcus Miller) it was time for me to produce another one. It was already for years in my mind and on paper. But you have to take the time for it and do it with the right people and energy. The intention is not only to have great notes, sounds – but also the feeling you want to share…

At the moment I have been working on my new CD, actually we have been working on it for exactly a year now. It all started when I met the Polish producer Robert Kubiszyn (who also is a great bass player). We wanted to make a CD together and started to work, that is how it get started. I was playing for years with new work and it was time to work it out. The difference is that we wanted to put a CD together with American and European musicians playing together. Making the bridge with music, people and music styles. That is what makes this CD ‘On Fire’ unique. George Duke, Poogie Bell and also Paul Jackson are part of this CD. We had a great time working together, after all we are a big Jazz Family.

Producing on both side of the Atlantic Ocean

Patches has a long history of playing and recording with several musicians over the whole world. Knows how to play different styles of music. But making this album is something what is from Patches, playing with the best and follow his heart to hear the right notes who brings that special  ‘Patches’feeling out. Honest, from the heart and right to your soul.  Listening to the CD On Fire, brings a new dimension in the world of authentically (jazz) music.

MPS: On Fire is modern jazz CD with a mixture of different styles. It is the combination of two worlds with the best players I can imagine. Some from Europe, and some from the USA. I have been fortunate to create and to do that. The synergy we have together,  is something you can’t explain, but when you hear the cd… there is something new to listen at. Working with all those great people with a long history of making music, makes the CD so much more intense. It is something I am really proud of how we achieve this together.  These days you make your CD first and then you are looking for a label.

The best of both worlds

MPS: It’s great to tell how we managed this CD. It was based on time and place. It was a great global project from the first start. We started with recording the drums – Poogie came to Warsaw from Pittsburgh via … Bulgaria. Then we recorded some music in Warsaw, Krakow when Kenny Garrettcame to Poland in November and some tracks were recorded in Los Angeles with George Duke and Paul Jackson Jr. The final mix was made in Warsaw in May, and mastered  in …the isle of Skye. Yes this was really a global project. We also are thankful that Robert was keeping it all together for us. In that way he was not only a good musician and producer but so much more.
